The Tortoise and the Hare Entry No. 5

The Magic of Ordinary Days
By Anne Howard Creel
I chanced upon this TV movie that I liked of the same title, ably played by Skeet Ulrich and Keri Russell. I learned that it was based on a book. I have a penchant nowadays of tracing movies to the books they’re based from. More and more, I notice these things as I’ve opened a bookstore. Not every book gets a movie tie-in cover.
The movie is a condensed, distilled version of the book. It manages to jar all the feelings involved in 90 minutes and so is more compelling. There’s no time to roam in the prairie, as it were. I wouldn’t be quick to dismiss the book though. It garners a solid 3.9 in Goodreads.
I wonder how a quiet book like that lands a movie. The book is not plot-driven as much as it is idea-driven. I guess forgiveness and acceptance, quiet as they are, are revolutionary. Aren’t we always uneasy in the face of goodness that demands nothing in return, that is not patronising? It’s like we can’t accept its roominess until we forgive ourselves.
I’ve had this book in the background as I sped through other more attention-grabbing books. It is a good book to lower the heart rate just before going to bed, and I mean it in all good sense. For that, I’d tag it as a tortoise read. A sweet love story. For historical fiction lovers.
